The Problem

New training specialists often struggle to develop effective training materials, which has led to repeated customer complaints and forced other trainers to redo their work, resulting in wasted time and resources.

The Solution

To address the problem, I combined my own experience developing job-specific training with insights into transitioning into a new role and feedback from the Training Manager. In my work as a training specialist, I consistently observed challenges among new specialists, including misunderstanding company needs, miscommunication with SMEs, reliance on technical jargon, and the creation of text-heavy presentations with limited visuals or interaction. At times, training was developed without a full understanding of key process details, leading to rework and delays.

These recurring issues motivated me to design a scenario-based eLearning experience that guides new specialists through realistic decision-making. By using a story-driven approach with real-world consequences, the course creates a practical, engaging, and memorable learning environment that encourages the use of best practices from the very beginning of a project.

My Process

I developed this project using the ADDIE instructional design model. During the Analysis phase, I identified the need to help new Training Specialists understand the walkthrough process. In the Design phase, I created a scenario-based learning experience centered around realistic workplace challenges. During Development, I built interactive activities, visuals, and branching scenarios in Articulate Storyline. The course was refined through feedback from subject matter experts and instructional designers to ensure accuracy, engagement, and effective learner experience. Once approved, I moved into visual design. To build the course, I used various tools, and the final product integrated storytelling and visual cues, while engaging them with real-world challenges.

Action Map

As part of the analysis process, I collaborated with my Training Manager to identify the performance gap, define the project goals, and determine the key steps needed to develop effective job-specific training. This included identifying the information needed during client meetings and the questions required to gather training requirements. Drawing from my own experience as a Training Specialist, I analyzed the client meeting and information-gathering process to identify the most effective methods for collecting the data needed to develop training materials for our customers.

Text-Based Storyboard

After completing the action map, I moved into the design phase and created a text- based storyboard to serve as the project’s blueprint. My goal was to immerse learners in a realistic, scenario-driven experience where they would encounter different client behaviors and choose the best response. Each scenario included one correct option and distractors to encourage reflection on decision-making and its consequences. To mirror real workplace challenges, I introduced Joseph as the new training specialist. His experiences illustrate both effective actions and common missteps, guiding learners through unfamiliar situations. This approach helps learners understand how real decisions impact training outcomes and reinforces the fundamentals of creating effective job-specific training.

This eLearning experience follows the story of Joseph, a newly hired training specialist, as he takes on his first major project. Designed as a scenario-based course, it places learners in Joseph’s shoes, guiding them through the decision-making process of developing job-specific training. From conducting client meetings and gathering information to identifying hazards and designing engaging content, participants make choices that shape Joseph’s success. The project blends storytelling with interactive activities—such as walkthroughs, branching scenarios, and knowledge checks—to immerse learners in real-world challenges. By combining narrative, visuals, and practical decision-making, this course not only introduces Joseph’s journey but also equips learners with the skills to create effective, customer-focused training solutions.

Visual Mockups

I created a mood board inspired by a professional business environment, featuring a mix of younger and experienced professionals to reflect the target audience. From there, I developed a style guide to maintain consistency throughout the course. The design focused on realistic characters, cohesive office environments, and a color palette that complemented the selected imagery, resulting in a polished, professional learning experience.

Interactive Prototype

I developed an interactive prototype in Articulate Storyline, incorporating visuals, animations, and graphics that aligned with the course narrative. My goal was to create a realistic and engaging experience that immersed learners in the story while supporting key learning points. Rather than relying solely on text, I used visuals, icons, and voiceovers to help learners connect with the content and maintain engagement. To capture attention from the start, I introduced Joseph, a new Training Specialist, and his first project assignment. The opening scenario highlights the importance of being prepared for a client meeting and gathering the information needed to develop effective job-specific training. Through storytelling, animations, and voice narration, I created a strong hook that guides learners through the training development process and keeps

them engaged throughout the experience.

Full Development

After incorporating feedback from the interactive prototype, I completed the development of the remaining course content. Using the storyboard and visual design mockups as a guide, I built the course in Articulate Storyline 360 and refined the user experience through multiple iterations. The course includes interactive activities, knowledge checks, mentor-guided feedback, and purposeful transitions designed to keep learners engaged while supporting the learning objectives

Results and Takeaways

Managing this project from start to finish provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen my instructional design skills and gain hands-on experience throughout the development process.

Managing this project from start to finish provided a valuable opportunity to streng-

then my instructional design skills and gain hands-on experience throughout the development process.

  • Design Process
I used the ADDIE model to guide the project from analysis through development. By collaborating with a subject-matter expert and applying action- mapping techniques, I identified the performance need and designed a learner-centered solution. Storyboarding and visual mockups helped establish a clear direction for development, ensuring consistency and alignment with the learning objectives.

  • Working with an SME
Partnering with a subject-matter expert was essential to understanding the process, identifying key learning requirements, and ensuring content accuracy. Their expertise helped shape realistic scenarios and practical learning activities.

  • Graphic Design
This project allowed me to further develop my graphic design skills by creating a cohesive visual experience. Selecting the right color palette, imagery, and layout helped support the course content while maintaining a professional and engaging look.

  • Storytelling
One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of storytelling in eLearning. Creating a compelling narrative helped capture learner attention, establish relevance, and increase engagement. A strong story and meaningful scenario can transform content from informational to immersive, making learning more memorable and impactful.
